Year 5

In our mathematical journey, children have delved into the fascinating realm of numbers, expanding their comprehension of place value to the vast expanse of 1,000,000. They've honed their skills in rounding six-digit numbers to the nearest ten, hundred, and thousand with the aid of number lines. Through the application of formal methods, they've mastered addition and subtraction, seamlessly executing exchanges with confidence and proficiency. Moreover, they've tackled the intricate challenge of multi-step addition and subtraction problems.

As mathematicians, children will learn the formal method of multiplication and division. In this unit the children will multiply numbers with 4 digits by 2 digits using the area model, use long multiplication to solve calculations, learn how to use short division to divide a 4-digit number by a 1-digit number, divide with remainders and solve problems with multiplication and division.

As mathematicians, children developed their understanding of geometry. They learned how to classify, estimate, and measure angles. Children identified the difference between regular and irregular polygons. In the end, they explored lines of symmetry of different shapes and represented the position of a shape following a reflection or translation.
