Heathrow Primary School
Autumn
This term, Year 5 will be studying Sculpture and 3D installation art, in particular looking at what is installation art and how to design their own installation art piece using mixed media. The children will analyse examples of installation art, identifying common features and using the questions to guide their ideas. We will also learn about a great artist Cai Guo-Qiang and also discuss how his scale of work will affect the viewers. Children will discuss about the message behind the installation heritage and think about the messages their own pieces of art give. Finally, we will plan out how to make our installation art more interactive by using lighting, sound or special effects.
Spring
As artists, children learned about painting and mixed media. They focused on how to develop a self-portrait and combine different materials for effect. Children also developed ideas towards an outcome by experimenting with materials and techniques. In the end, they applied their knowledge and skills to create a mixed-media self-portrait.
Summer
This half term, our children have launched into an exciting space-themed art topic, exploring the bold, imaginative world of retrofuturism and the textured printmaking style of contemporary artist Teis Albers. Inspired by his layered, mixed-media approach, the children created their own collographs using a variety of tactile materials. Once their textured plates were complete, they painted over them and carefully printed their designs into their art books, revealing vibrant, galactic-inspired patterns. They learned to explore the purpose and effect of imagery and understood the importance of decision-making in creative processes. As artists, they developed skills in evaluating images and applied an understanding of drawing processes.
