Week 2 - Octopus Socktopus

This week we have based our learning around the story ‘Octopus Socktopus.’ We read the story and looked at all the different types of octopus. The children looked at photographs of  different types of fish. They used their phonic knowledge to identify the initial sounds in words, recognise the sound in the pack and then form the letter correctly using the rhyme. Some children were able to hear all of the dominant sounds in words, write the whole word, a short phrase or a full sentence!

We discussed creating our own octopus or making one from the story. The children used paper plates and their art and fine motor skills to create their own.

The children also used handprints to make octopus and printed using bubbles wrap to create an ‘under the sea’ picture.

We watched a video of octopus in their habitat, we used our communication and language skills to describe them and learnt some cool new facts too!

We learnt a new octopus song in our music session, focusing on keeping the same pitch and following the tune.

We used our math skills to count octopus and match them to the correct numeral. Some of us found one more than a given number.

The children learnt the ‘c’ sound and practised their letter formation in coloured sand.
