Year 4

AUTUMN

This term in Maths, Year 4 have been learning about place value, measurement and addition & subtraction. We represented, added and subtracted numbers up to and beyond 10,000. Furthermore, we learned to apply our rounding and estimating skills to add and subtract using efficient methods. We particularly enjoyed applying our arithmetic skills to measuring and calculating lengths, heights and distance. It was great fun to apply these skills to measure trees on Outdoor classroom day. Going forward, we will continue to consolidate our times tables facts up to the 12 times table as well as learn written methods of multiplication and division.

SPRING

In Maths this term, Year 4 looked at fractions and decimals. We learnt how to find equivalent fractions using a fraction wall before formally investigating multiplying and dividing the numerator and denominator by the same number. We also learnt to find fractions of amounts, order decimals and find decimal and fraction equivalents. Earlier in the term, we studied finding the area of rectilinear shapes. We were challenged to create a symmetrical ‘U’ shape using only 20 rods. The number of square units in each shape had to be an even or an odd number. Have a look at the challenge and see if you can attempt it before looking at our solutions!
