Year 1

AUTUMN

In the ‘colour splash’ topic the children will learn the key skills of experiments in paint, using a wide variety of tools (e.g brushes, sponges, fingers) to apply paint to a range of surfaces. We will begin to explore colour mixing, mixing the primary colour red, yellow and blue and know that primary colour can be mixed to make secondary colours. Year 1 will select colours, shapes and materials to suit ideas and purposes and know that pattern is a design which shapes, colour or lines are repeated. The children will describe the similarities and differences between practices in Art and design, e.g between painting and sculpture, and linking these to their own work.

SPRING

In this unit Year 1 will understand and use different line types and mark-making techniques in drawing; enhancing children's ability to describe lines, control drawing materials like pencils and chalk, and experiment with various media, while responding to music. Year 1 will show knowledge of the language and literacy to describe lines, show control when using string and chalk to draw lines, experiment with a range of mark-making techniques, responding appropriately to music, colour neatly and carefully, featuring a range of different media and colours, apply a range of marks successfully to a drawing and produce a drawing that displays observational skill, experimenting with a range of lines and mark making.

Summer

During this topic, children will begin exploring various weaving techniques using a range of different media to create these. Children will begin to develop skills such as measuring materials, cutting, and adding decoration. Children will learn how to wrap, weave, plait and join using woven materials.
