Week 8 - World Nursery Rhyme Week

This week we took part in ‘World Nursery Rhyme week.' We learnt a new rhyme every day and based our learning around them.

Nursery rhymes are a fantastic way to develop children’s vocabulary and also provide other fun learning opportunities which enables the children to develop their language and numbers skills and knowledge.

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star

We sang the nursery rhyme changing the tempo and pitch of our voices.

The children used their fine motor skills to cut out two triangles. They named the shapes and talked about their properties, such as ‘three pointy corners,’ and ‘three straight sides.’ The children rotated and flipped the triangles and placed them on top of each other to make a star. We used the star to make a magic wand. The children decorated them using glitter.

We discussed the things we would wish for if we could wish upon a star with our magic wand.

Old Mac Donald Had a Farm

We sang the Nursery rhyme old Mac Donald Had a Farm. We played a guessing game. We used the clues to help us identify the animals.

The children chose to make different farm animals using food. They selected a pig, dog or hen. We used rice cakes for the base, the children used their fine motor skills to spread the cream cheese onto the rice cake and arranged the fruit to add the features of the animals. The bets part was eating them!

The children practised their cutting skills to cut around farm pictures. We focused on holding the scissors correctly and  positioning our hands correctly with the thumb on top. We also worked on  holding the paper in our other hand and turning it around the cut around the shapes, rather than twisting our hand with the scissors.

The Big Ship Sails

We learnt this new song as a class using actions. We then mapped out routes on the world map using a boat. We used the positional language of ‘under,’ ‘over,’ and ‘next to.’

The children made a boat craft using lolly sticks, pipe cleaners and card. They uses the lolly sticks for the base of the boat, stuck the pipe cleaner as the mast and then cut their own sail using coloured paper.

We did an investigation into which boat would travel faster. The children learnt the word ‘prediction.’ They made predictions about the boats and tried to explain their reasoning. We then tested the boats and blew them across the waters using straws. We then evaluated the results of our test, discussing which bloat was the fastest, which boat was the slowest, which boat went the furthest distance and which boat went the shortest distance. We discussed whether our predictions were right and why we thought they were/weren’t.

Incy Wincy Spider

A spider came visit us in Nursery to listen to our singing. We practised changing our the pitch and tempo of the song.

We talked about the different types of weather in the song. We watched videos to make observations of the weather and tried to think about how we might feel there. We discussed the different type of clothing we would need. We gave our opinions on the type of weather we like and tried to explain our reasoning.

We did some marble painting with white paint on black paper to create spider webs. The children enjoyed watch the marble roll and create the paint lines. It helped to support their motor skills and coordination knowing which direction to move their arms to allow the marble to roll.

The children wore the spider hat and completed an obstacle course around the spiders web. They practised follow instructions with the positional language ‘under,’ and ‘over,’ when completing it. The all came back for many more turns!

5 Current Buns

We sang the song altogether. Some children came up and acted out giving the pennies for the current buns. We all held onto a large parachute and moved it up and down to keep the beat of the song. We had 5 ‘buns’ (cushions) on the parachute and a child was asked to remove one each time. They then had a go at putting up high when we used a high pitch and low for a low pitch. The children then crawled under the parachute and swapped places with each other. The children followed the instructions really well.

We made current buns using tissue paper, cotton wool and pom poms. The children used their fine motor skills to spread the glue and carefully lay the tissue paper flat. They used the cotton wool as icing for the top of the bun. The children scrunched up black tissue paper to stick on as the current in the bun and lasted glued a pom-pom as the cherry on top.

The children formed the letters in name by forming them with their finger in sugar.
