Week 9 - The Gingerbread Man

Our story this week was 'The Gingerbread Man.' We really lovely joining in with this book, especially to say “run, run, as fast as you can, you can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man.” We read different versions of the story and compared them. We also compared this story to the ‘Runaway Pancake.’ We talked about the similarities and differences.

Our favourite part of the week was mixing our own dough and rolling it out to make our own gingerbread people. We used our motor skills to roll the dough out evenly to the correct thickness, we then used out cutters and had to carefully peel away the excess dough. We discussed the changes that happened to the dough in the oven and then again when they had cooled.

We decorated our gingerbread people with icing that we used a 'glue' to place our buttons, our raisin eyes and our strawberry lace smile. We counted out each amount correctly and showed our, ‘ finger numbers,’ to match.

The children enjoyed honing their fine motor skills when cutting out shapes with the characters from the Gingerbread Man.

We learnt the ‘g’ sound and practised forming it with paint sticks. We focused on hearing and matching initial sounds this week. We looked at the pictures and stretched the words to hear the sound.  We had to choose the correct sound from three options and used our fine motor skills to place a peg on the correct sound.

We recapped recognising numbers, counting to the cardinal number and matching the numerals and properties of 2D and 3D shapes. We also were learning about repeated patterns. We were continuing repeated patterns ABAB and ABCABC with two and 3 colours to make a new scarf for the Gingerbread Man. We did this as a whole class during our Maths carpet session, and individually with crayons finish the repeated patterned scarves.

We were bowling in the outdoor area this week. The children had to set up the skittles by recognising the numbers and putting them in order. They were focusing on the positional language, ‘behind,’ and, ‘next to,’ to put them in the correct place. They practised rolling the ball, just like we have been focusing on in our PE lessons to knock down the skittles. They had to look at the skittles and make sure their hand was pointing in the right direction. They counted the amount. Each time they rolled we discussed whether they had knocked down more, less or the same amount.
