Heathrow Primary School
This week we based our learning around the story, ‘All by myself.’ The Nursery children have been beginning to make sense of their own life stories from when they were a baby to present day. We talked about the things babies do, and how we need to take care of them because they are so young and unable to do things for themselves. The children then discussed and identified the things they could do as a baby and compared them with the things they can do now. We sorted different things that we use as babies and as children.
We discussed that we are big girls and boys now and can do things, “independently.” The children were encouraged and praised for ‘having a go,’ and doing things all by themselves. We celebrated and displayed lots of WOWs this week for independence!
We discussed the changes that take place in our lives, we start out as babies, the grow into children and then we keep on growing until we eventually become a grown-up/adult. The children learnt new vocabulary based around this.
The children continued to practise their cutting skill this week. They cut up pictures of babies, children and grown-ups and had to stick them in the correct order. We discussed the human life cycle and what people can do at each stage of their development.
We talked about how life can be as a grown up, we may get to drive, or choose who we want to live with or have children of our own. The children dressed up in different uniforms and talked about what jobs people do, especially the people who help us. They then talked about what they would like to do in the future when they become grown-ups.
We matched adult animals to their babies. The children were encouraged to use clues such as size to help identify this. The children were learning the different names for baby animals.
We helped baby bear to count independently using one to one correspondence (one number name for one object) and finding the cardinal value (the quantity of things it represents) by stopping at the correct number.
We practised our number recognition and physical skills by playing bowling. The skittles were numbered and the children were learning to recognise which numbers they had knocked down. They were also trying to count the number of skittles and say whether they had knocked down more or less for each go.
In Phonics this week, we identified different animal sounds and we also practised making different sounds with body percussion and instruments.
We practised matching the letters in our name and placed them in the correct order.
