Heathrow Primary School
In honour of Sir David Attenborough turning 100 years old, children through EYFS to Year 6 Heathrow Primary school will be used our Outdoor Learning Day, on Thursday 21st May, to create various habitats around our school grounds. We want the children to understand the significance of Sir David Attenborough’s conservation work and the awareness he has brought to supporting wildlife throughout his impressive career. In addition to this, we used this day as an opportunity for the children to deepen their knowledge of our local wildlife whilst researching and creating different habitat spaces. These habitats will encourage different living things to our school grounds and can then be used to support future learning about animals and their environments in the years to come.
EYFS
Children in our nursery and reception classes made 'habitat spheres' by collecting natural resources from the local area and filling a wire sphere.
Year 1
Year 1 children built a 'bug snug' by collecting various twigs and branches and using these to build a twig teepee.
Year 2
Children in Year 2 created their own 'bug hotel's through using natural resources to fill a wooden house template. These natural resources will provide well needed space for small insects, wasps and spiders.
Year 3
In Year 3, the children used natural resources to create a wildlife habitat within a tyre. These tyres, now based on our school grounds, will attract insects.
Year 4
Year 4 used recycled tubs and containers to make bird feeders. Using dried mealworms and various seeds, the children made these feeders to hang up in our trees for small birds to feed on.
Year 5
Year 5 are encouraging more wildlife to our school grounds through their rockery area they have built. The children used various rocks and slabs to build the area, which they also filled with small plants.
Year 6
Year 6 spent their outdoor learning day recycling plastic bottles into planters. These planters have been filled with various flowering seeds and now hang up around our field to grow and attract bees and butterflies.
