Week 11 & 12 - Easter & Spring

This week, the children have enjoyed a range of exciting seasonal and cultural activities, developing key skills across all areas of learning.

We began by learning about Eid and how it is celebrated. The children explored how families come together, wear special clothes, share food and celebrate with loved ones. This supported their understanding of different cultures and traditions, helping to build respect, awareness, and curiosity about the world around them.

We began by creating Eid cards, where the children practised fine motor skills such as cutting, folding and decorating. This activity also supported creativity, self-expression, and an awareness of different cultures and celebrations, helping to build respect and understanding of the world around them.

The children explored the season of Spring through observations and photographs. We discussed  how the temperature and weather changes, and how we see lots of new life in animals, such a chicks and lambs, and in plants, such as daffodils.

They took part in spring observational painting, carefully looking at details in images and recreating them through art. This supported observation skills, attention to detail, hand-eye coordination, and creative development, as well as encouraging the use of descriptive language.

In literacy and Understanding the World, the children learned about the Story of Easter and how Christians celebrate Easter. This helped to develop their knowledge of different beliefs and traditions, as well as listening and comprehension skills when engaging with stories. We discussed that the new life in spring and Jesus's resurrection is why people celebrate Easter with chocolate eggs.

We made chocolate nests by crushing shredded wheat and mixing it with melted chocolate and then placed some mini eggs inside. The children discussed what happened in the microwave, whether it made it hot or cold. We talked about how the consistency changes when it is heated up and it is a hard solid and then it became a soft gooey liquid. They counted out three eggs to place in their nest.

We also read We’re Going on an Egg Hunt, which supported story sequencing, predicting, and engagement with repetitive language. The excitement continued with a special visit from the Easter Bunny! The children made their own egg baskets, developing cutting skills, hand strength, and independence, before collecting eggs, which encouraged turn-taking, following instructions, and cooperation.

In maths, we recapped numbers 1–5, strengthening number recognition, counting accuracy, and one-to-one correspondence. The children built confidence in identifying numbers and linking them to quantities.

In phonics, we revisited previously taught sounds and focused on initial sounds and alliteration, helping children to hear the first sound in words and recognise patterns in language. This supports phonological awareness, an essential foundation for early reading and writing.

Overall, the children have shown great enthusiasm and curiosity, developing a wide range of skills including communication and language, physical development, early maths, literacy, and understanding of the world. It has been a joyful and engaging week of learning!
