Heathrow Primary School
This week, we have based our learning around the ‘Elmer’ stories. We read a range of different Elmer stories and learnt about ‘Elmer Day.’ The children have been learning new vocabulary such as ‘multi-coloured’, ‘unique,’ ‘special,’ and ‘joke.’ The children could all name something that makes them ‘unique.’
The children drew and decorated their own Elmers in their book. They were able to focus on drawing with complexity, focusing on the features of the elephant and adding more detail to their decoration. Some children wrote the initial sound of the colours they chose, some children wrote the word and some were able to write phrases.
The children used their fine motor skills to cut out their Elmer ears, ensuring that they were holding scissors correctly and learning to turn the paper around, not their hand. Later in the week the children then collaged different colours onto their elephant ears ready to wear on ‘Elmer Day.’
The children used the top of their milk bottles to create their very own miniature Elmers. They enjoyed using the PVA glue and sticking the multicoloured tissue paper on, although they got very sticky whilst doing it! They were so excited to see them all lined up on our celebration table on Elmer Day.
On Thursday, we celebrated ‘Elmer Day’ by dressing up in multicoloured clothes and wearing our Elmer ears! We Paraded through the school, showing off our beautiful ears.
We learnt the ‘l’ sound and practised our formation in coloured sand.
