Year 6

Autumn

After reading ‘The Tadpole’s Promise’ at the beginning of the year, the Year 6 children planned and wrote their own stories based on unlikely animal friendships. They turned their stories into picture books which they read to Year 2, who absolutely loved them!

This term we have enjoyed reading 'Holes' by Louis Sachar. We used this book to inspire our writing and to develop our reading skills. We made inferences about the different characters, backed up by evidence from the text as well as role playing scene to convey the different character's personalities; retold the story of Madam Zeroni and Stanley's great-great-grandfather; described the characters using a range of punctuation in our sentences; wrote wonderful setting descriptions using a range of descriptive devices; and wrote our own alternative endings to the story.

Spring

In our literacy lessons we will be reading ‘Zoo’ by Anthony Browne. Using this text, we will be writing a diary entry from an animal’s perspective and writing balanced arguments as to whether animals should be kept in zoos.

We will then be learning about speech writing and producing powerful, persuasive speeches about climate change. After half term we will be reading 'The Day the Crayons Quit' and using this text to develop our letter writing skills. Finally, we will be linking our literacy and science lessons to write some scientific rap poetry and an information text about the dangers of smoking.
