Autumn - The Great Fire of London
This term, Year 2 students stepped into the role of historians to discover when, where and why ‘The Great Fire of London’ broke out. Pupils were able to extract information from a variety of sources and raise valid questions relevant to the enquiry. By the end of the topic the children were able to identify the reasons why so many houses burnt down. They enjoyed re-creating the scene of the ‘Great Fire’ by demonstrating what equipment was used to put out the fire. They also consolidated their learning by attempting to re-design London to make sure that a fire of that size would never take hold of London again.
Spring 2 - Locality
The children started this topic with a walk around the local area in order to identify the key features that Sipson had. Children then bought all of this knowledge back to the classroom as they look at different features of maps. Children focussed on different map symbols and began to learn what the symbols on a map represented. Children were then able to combine all of this knowledge by drawing their own maps of our local area ensuring that they had the key features such as a title, a key and map symbols. For the final lesson, children compared Sipson village now to Sipson village in the past and discussed and shared the similarities and differences. The children then got to write out key events that happened in the past that they believed were the most significant.
Summer - Lives of Significant Individuals (Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole
As Historians, we have been finding out who Florence Nightingale is and how she was able to help soldiers. We looked at her important achievements and different people’s opinions of her. We also looked at Mary Seacole, and main events within her life as well as her greatest achievements. Finally, we finished with a debate which one of them should have their statue outside the St Thomas hospital in London.
