Week 9- Family

This week we based our learning around the story, ‘The Family Book.’ We talked about how every family can be different, but they all have one thing in common and that is that they love each other. We had a circle time to share the people in our family. We read the story ‘Monkey puzzle’ and reinforced the message that all families can look different, but they are still a family. We looked at different photos of other families and talked about some of the similarities and differences.

We made our own lolly stick families, naming and drawing the features of our family members.

We shared different experiences we have with our families, the places we go and the things we do. We also talked about the things we do at home and the things they do for us.

We talked about our feelings and linked these to the ‘Zones of Regulation’ we use daily. We looked at pictures to find clues that tell us how someone is feeling, why they might be feeling like that and what they/we could do to help get them back to the ‘green zone,’ being happy and feeling safe. The children discussed the different things that make them feel happy, sad and angry. They then acted these out and we placed the photos on display.

We used our cutting skills to cut out family pictures. We focused on holding the scissors correctly, and the paper in our other hand. We also focused on turning the paper, rather than our scissors to cut around the rectangular shape.

This week we also made Christmas cards that we will post on our trip to the post office in two weeks’ time!
