Week 8- World Nursery Rhyme Week

Sing a Song of Sixpence

On Monday we learnt the song:

Sing a song of sixpence a pocket full of rye,

Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie.

When the pie was opened the birds began to sing,

Oh wasn't that a dainty dish to set before the king?

The king was in his counting house counting out his money,

The queen was in the parlour eating bread and honey

The maid was in the garden hanging out the clothes,

When down came a blackbird and pecked off her nose!

Oh what a commotion, little Jenny Wren, flew down into the garden and put it back again!

 

We used playdough to make our own pies with different fillings.

 

We hung out the washing on our washing line, we counted to amount and matched the corresponding number.

Humpty Dumpty

On Tuesday we learnt the rhyme:

Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall.

Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.

All the kings horses and all the kings men,

Couldn’t put Humpty together again.

 

What’s poor Humpty going to do?

He’s in a bit of a muddle!

Oh no, Humpty’s sad and sore,

Maybe he needs a cuddle.

 

Humpty Dumpty sat on the floor.

Rubbing his head and his knees that were sore.

He counted his fingers and counted his toes.

He checked for his eyes, his ears and his nose.

 

What’s poor Humpty going to do?

He’s in a bit of a muddle!

Oh no, Humpty’s sad and sore,

Shall we give him a cuddle.

 

Humpty Dumpty jumped to his feet,

Saluted the captain and marched to the beat.

He marched left and right and he marched up and down,

And then Humpty Dumpty marched through the town.

 

Humpty Dumpty’s no longer feeling sad.

He’s not in a muddle!

Hooray! Humpty’s happy again,

Let’s all have a cuddle.

 

We learnt some extra verses of the rhyme in a new version

We made a wall by stamping Lego bricks in to brown paint. We tried to line them up to make it look like a brick wall, just like Humpty Dumpty sat on. We used our photos to become Humpty Dumpty’s sat on the wall!

 

We practised our fine motor skills to cut out pictures of Humpty Dumpty. Some of us were able to make snips, some of up were able to cut along continuous lines and some of us were able to move the paper to change the direction of our cutting to cut around shapes.

When I Was One

On Wednesday we learnt the song:

When I was one I tickled my tum

The day I went to sea

I jumped aboard a pirate ship and the captain said to me

We’re going this way, that way

Forwards and backwards

Over the Irish sea

Up and down, round and round

A pirates life for me

 

When I was two I played peekaboo…

When I was three I scraped by knee…

When I was four I stamped on the floor…

When I was five I said “high five…”

 

We made our own pirate hats using Origami. The children strengthened their muscles by pressing down and running their fingers strongly against the fold. We discussed the different 2D shapes we could see during the process. They drew their own skull and crossbones and took photos with their hat and the parrot. 

The children engaged in a pirate obstacle course in which they had to walk the plank! They were working on their balance and coordination and pushing themselves out of their comfort zone.

I Hear Thunder

On Thursday we learnt the song:

I hear thunder, I hear thunder

Hark don't you, hark don't you

Pitter patter raindrops, pitter patter raindrops

I'm wet through, so are you!

 

Leaves are falling, leaves are falling

Cold wind blows, cold wind blows

Warm my hands together, warm my hands together

Rub my nose, wiggles my toes!

 

Catching snowflakes, catching snowflakes

One by one, one by one

Taste them as they’re melting, taste them as they’re melting

Yum yum yum, on my tongue.

 

Sunbeams dancing, sunbeams dancing

Summer sun, summer sun

Children play together, children play together

Having fun, all day long.

 

Stars are twinkling, stars are twinkling,

Shining bright, shining bright,

Fairies sprinkle stardust, fairies sprinkle stardust,

Shhh sleep tight, shhh sleep tight

 

We carried out a science investigation called, ‘Pitter Patter Rain cloud.’ The children created a “cloud” by adding shaving foam to the top of a jar filled with water. They then used a pipette to drip blue coloured water onto the foam. As the foam became saturated, the coloured water began to fall through into the jar, showing how rain forms. This demonstrated that clouds hold water droplets, and when they become too full, the water falls as rain.

 

 

We listened to and sang ‘I Hear Thunder’, focusing on the theme of each verse: thunder and rain, wind and autumn leaves, snow, sunshine and outdoor play, and stars and night-time. We recalled the different verse themes and matched them to images. We then discussed sound effects we could add to the song, using voice sounds, body percussion and descriptive words. For example, we suggested ‘pitter patter’ and ‘tinkling’ for raindrops and a loud clap for thunder. We focused on one verse at a time, using the images to support our ideas.

Two Little Dickie Birds

On Friday we learnt the song:

Two little dicky birds

Sitting on a wall.

One named Peter,

And one named Paul.

Fly away, Peter.

Fly away, Paul.

Come back, Peter.

Come back, Paul.

We made Dickie Birds pictures using a variety of 2D shapes. The children had to select the most appropriate shapes for each part of their body and manipulate them by rotating or reflecting them to create a bird.

 

 

 

 

We used the large Duplo in our outdoor area to build a wall for Peter and Paul. We focused on it be stable by having a strong base and making sure they were stacked well. We also had to be careful to ensure they balance. The children started off with adult support to keep it stable, but requested to continue to build the wall without adult support whilst doing, "teamwork." When it fell down, they showed resilience and perseverance to build it back up again.
