Heathrow Primary School
This week we learnt about the festival of Diwali and how people celebrate it. The children were able to recall way such as decorating houses, rangoli patterns, mehndi, eating lots of food, spending time with our families, going to the temple to pray, eating sweets, lighting divas and fireworks. The children drew some of these ideas in the their book and practised forming the first letter of the their names. We made our own divas using salt dough. The children selected their favourite colour and used their motor skills to press and squeeze and roll the dough into a ball. They used the end of a rolling pin to press down to make space for our candles. The children then added glitter.
The children were building up their vocabulary and were using describing words such as colours, size and onomatopoeias such as: ‘boom, ‘crash’, ‘bang, ‘fizz’, ‘pop.’
The children made their own sparklers using tissue paper and pipe cleaners. They practised their cutting skills by cutting straight lines and then used their fine motor skills to curl the pipe cleaner around a pencil to make it curly. They were all so excited to see how they had changed it. They had fun pulling the tissue sheets apart and twirling it around in the air, just like they did with the real sparklers.
The children were learning about shapes this week. They made some rocket fireworks using rectangular lollypop sticks and then cut along lines to create triangles. The enjoyed cutting the tissue paper to add flames at the bottom.
We learnt about Rangoli patterns whilst learning about Diwali. The children made their own Rangoli patterns using coloured pasta.
We used our motor skills to draw fireworks using chalk. We used different techniques to make them look like fireworks, such as drawing dots, straight lines, wavy lines, and circles to make our fireworks.
We carried out some firework cutting to practise our cutting skills, trying to hold the scissors correctly in one hand and the paper in the other.
In PSHE we had a lesson called, ‘I am Special.’ The children looked into a hidden box to see the special things inside there. They found a mirror and were looking at themselves. We realised that we are the special ones. We learnt a song about us all being special. We listened to special song from Harold which told us all the things he can do that make him special. We shared what makes us special and tried to use the full sentence, ‘I am special because..’
It was Talk PANTS Week this week. We listened to the Pantosaurus video that tells us that “your private part belong only to you, your pants cover up your private parts.” We also spoke about trusted adults and who we can go to if someone tries to look at or touch our pants. The children were able to identify “mummy,” “daddy,” “teachers,” “aunties, uncles, grandma.”
