Year 6

Autumn

This term, Year 6 have been working hard to improve their arithmetic and reasoning skills involving place value, calculations and fractions. Mr Wade's group have been mastering the four calculations and this week have moved on to division, beginning with short division. They have been using their times tables skills to become more efficient with their answers as well as identifying mistakes in calculations to improve their reasoning. Mrs Hayer's group have been simplifying, comparing and ordering fractions and have now begun work on adding and subtracting fractions, solving some real-life problems related to this. Miss Moody's group have shown an excellent understanding of calculating fractions, including calculations that involve more than one operation, where they have had to use BODMAS to complete these correctly. The children have now moved on to solving some tricky reasoning problems related to these concepts and have impressed Miss Moody with their explanations as to how these problems have been solved.

SPRING

This term we have been consolidating and revising our arithmetic knowledge as well as learning about shape, statistics, algebra and measures. Our lessons have included lots of whiteboard work, group work and reasoning practise to help us develop our skills and use and apply our knowledge of mathematical concepts. Also, on Number Day we used our measuring skills to create mathematical art known as 'Curves of Pursuit' which looked fantastic!

Summer:

The summer term began with Year 6 consolidating and revising all the maths learning they have done this year in preparation for the SATS tests. All the children worked incredibly hard and did their absolute best - all the staff at Heathrow are incredibly proud of them!

Following the SATS, Year 6 used and applied their maths learning in real life contexts by completing a range of investigations and taking part in a business workshop, 'BEE A Sweet Entrepreneur.' During the workshop, they were given a budget to set up a sweet business, sell their products and create a profit. The children loved it and the winning team, 'Nibujy's Sweets' sold their finished items at school.

This term, the children have also completed their Enterprise Days where they have all set up and run businesses at school. The children had to advertise their products, calculate their costs, sell their products, handle money correctly and then calculate their profit. They raised a huge amount of money which they are putting towards the Year 6 treat and Year 6 Disco. Well done Year 6!
