Year 6

AUTUMN

This term, we have been studying Crime and Punishment from the Roman times until now. While learning about Victorian times, we completed a fact hunt about Crime and Punishment and discussed what elements of Victorian Crime and Punishment we agreed or disagreed with, comparing this period of history to previous historical eras. We were also delighted to be able to visit The Tower of London to consolidate our learning of Tudor Crime and Punishment and enjoyed exploring the tower to see, in real life, the things we have learnt about in class.

SUMMER

This term we have been learning about World War Two. We have absolutely loved this topic and all the activities related to it. We began by learning the reasons why World War Two began and the order of events that led to war being declared. We then learnt about Evacuation which linked to our literacy book, ‘Goodnight Mister Tom’ and role played the evacuation process, portraying character’s feelings and emotions. Later in the topic, we learnt about the importance of rationing and the impact of propaganda posters on encouraging our nation to get involved in the war effort. Following this, we learnt about the Holocaust and the horrific tragedies that happened to millions of Jewish people at the hands of the Nazis. We wrote reports that included first-hand accounts of survivors stories and explained why it is so important to be tolerant and respectful of everyone in our world. To end our topic, we learnt about D-Day and created short animations to retell the story of the D-Day landings on the beaches of Normandy. We also wrote short narratives full of action and emotion to describe this event.
