PSHE

Intent

The personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) curriculum at Heathrow Primary school is an embedded part of our broad and balanced curriculum. It is a planned learning programme that is accessible to all and helps the children to grow and to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy, safe and prepared for life and work in modern Britain. Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development as well as promoting British values is an important part of this curriculum and of our school’s aims and ethos. Children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth and independence enabling them to become responsible as individuals and as members of families and of the wider community.

Implementation

At Heathrow Primary School we use a PSHE programme called SCARF which stands for Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship. SCARF provides a whole-school approach to building these essential foundations – crucial for children to achieve their best, academically and socially. It also fulfils the duties of the Relations Education (RE), Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education (HE) policies and government expectations. Alongside this, our aim is also to ensure that all children have the opportunity to experience many ‘real life’ experiences, whether that be in school or out in the wider community, to help them develop and use these skills. Good practice is shared throughout the school and it is every staff members’ responsibility to do this by being a good role-model and by having high expectations of our pupils.

PSHE is taught as half-termly units through weekly individual lessons. However, it is also part of a whole school approach to pastoral care and support and to providing a setting where the responsible choice becomes the easy choice and where children feel safe, valued and empowered to achieve and do their best. The children build upon their skills year on year and can apply these skills and see the relevance of their learning in everyday situations.

Each year group will be working on the same themes at the same time throughout the year. This allows for cross-phase collaboration and enables school to link the PSHE curriculum to our whole school assemblies. This also allows children to build on what they know and deepen their understanding. The themes we cover throughout the different year groups are:

Autumn term

  • Me and my relationship
  • Valuing differences

Spring term

  • Keeping myself safe
  • Rights and Responsibilities

Summer term

  • Being my best
  • Growing and changing

Impact

Our children at Heathrow Primary School will be able to confidently become healthy and responsible members of society through the following:

  • They will recognise and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of law and Liberty.
  • They will demonstrate a healthy outlook towards school – attendance will be at least in-line with national and behaviour will be good.
  • The large majority of children will achieve age related expectations across the wider curriculum in addition to the core subjects.

Children will be on their journey preparing them for life and work in modern Britain. This will be evident in book work as well as floor books which enable the subject leader to track the progress and hear the opinions and ideas voiced by pupils.
