Our story this week was 'The Elves and the shoemakers.' We really enjoyed discussing this story and learnt some new vocabulary. We chose our favourite shoes and talked about why we liked them best. Children chose a variety such as slippers, trainers, boots, sandals, crocs and wellies. They were able to describe how they looked and could write the initial sounds, or most of the sounds in the word.
We printed on shoes to design our own pattern and then used a needles and thread to stitch around the shoes. The children really preserved with a tricky job and were really proud of themselves. They were honing their fine motor skills whilst making shoes, just like the elves in the story. They also decorate large characters to go on our ‘World Book Day’ door display. The Governors came around to just the winning classes and we happened to be one! Well done to the children for all their hard work.
In Maths the children counted out miniature shoes and matched the to the correct numeral. They also looked closely to find the matching pair. They sorted the shoes by colour and counted how many there were of each colour. We practised our number recognition and gross motor skills by throwing the numbered beanbag at the correct number on the floor mat. The children had a lot of fun playing this game!
We celebrated ‘World Book Day’ by dressing up as our favourite characters or in our pyjamas with our favourite story book. We became detectives and had to match the clues to the story we had learnt about. The children were able to retell some of our previous stories and remember the repeated refrains from them. Some of the Year 6 children came in throughout the week to perform well known stories to the children. They found these performances hilarious!
This week we made Mother’s Day cards and practised our song to sing to Mothers. In PSHE we learnt all about how we can help other people and talked about the things we could do for Mummies to make them feel special. The children all spoke about why they loved their Mummies so much.
Some Mummies were able to come into the Nursery and celebrate with us. The children loved showing them around and playing with their Mummies and some of the other Mummies that were visiting too.
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
