Over the Spring Term, Year 4 enjoyed learning about deforestation and the impact that it has on the environment. We used two books to inspire us into writing balanced arguments and alternate story endings ‘The Vanishing Rainforest’ told the story about the Yanomami tribe torn between keeping the tradition of the tribe and breaking tradition to make progress in the material world. Using Conscience Alley, we weighed up the pros and cons of each viewpoint before the children wrote their own alternate story endings. They had to think carefully about the issues, dilemmas and peaceful resolutions that would benefit all.

‘The Great Kapok Tree’ was a beautiful book about the animals in the rainforest pleading with loggers not to cut down their beautiful home. Using our knowledge from our Geography lessons about deforestation and climate change, we structure strong balanced arguments about the deforestation debate. Have a read of our arguments and let us know you opinion.

We ended off the term with narrative poetry, where we had to think about intonation, volume and body language and the emotions they evoke in a reader.
